To drive with HUM, you must meet the minimum legal standards required for transportation services in your state, as well as HUM’s platform-specific expectations. HUM is designed for experienced rideshare drivers who want to build a Private Ride business and offer recurring, high-quality transportation services.
This article explains who is eligible to drive on HUM and what is required from a driver record and safety standpoint. For full legal language, please see the HUM Terms of Use at:

Who HUM Is For
HUM is intended for:
Drivers with at least one year of total rideshare driving experience
Drivers who want to offer Private Rides and build recurring clients
Drivers willing to operate professionally under local TNC laws and HUM standards
If you only want to occasionally accept on-demand trips and are not interested in building a Private Ride business, HUM is likely not a fit.
Local TNC laws and regulations always apply in addition to HUM’s qualifications.
Core Driver Qualification Rules
To drive on HUM, you must meet all of the following criteria:
1. Valid Driver’s License
Your license must be:
Active
Unexpired
Appropriate for the type of vehicle you drive
Issued by the state where you are driving
2. Minimum Rideshare Experience
You must have at least one year of rideshare driving experience (Uber, Lyft, taxi/NEMT, or similar passenger-driving).
3. Valid Vehicle Registration
Your vehicle must have:
An active, unexpired registration
Registration that matches your name or that you are legally authorized to use
(Full vehicle requirements are covered in a separate article.)
4. Valid Personal Auto Insurance
You must carry your own personal auto insurance that meets state minimums.
Even though HUM provides commercial coverage for HUM trips, personal insurance is required by law and is necessary for eligibility.
5. Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
Your MVR must meet all of the following:
No drug- or alcohol-related driving violations (DUI, DWI, etc.)
No major violations in the last 3 years
-
Minor violations + at-fault accidents combined:
No more than 3 in the last 3 years
No more than 2 in the last 12 months
6. Background Check Compliance
All drivers must pass:
A third-party background check, and
A Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review
The driver is responsible for the cost of the background/MVR check.
HUM does not cover these fees because HUM does not take a percentage of your fares.
7. Physically Able to Drive Safely
With or without reasonable accommodations, you must be capable of operating a vehicle safely.
8. Reporting Obligations
You must notify HUM:
Immediately if your license is suspended, revoked, or restricted
By the next business day if you receive a new moving violation
9. Management Discretion
HUM may approve or deny drivers at its discretion based on safety, compliance, or unique circumstances.
Definitions: Major vs. Minor Violations
Understanding these categories helps determine eligibility.
Major Violations (typically disqualifying, especially within 3 years)
Examples include:
Excessive speeding (15+ mph over)
Racing or exhibition driving
Careless, reckless, or imprudent driving
Attempting to evade or elude law enforcement
Failure to stop or report an accident
False accident reports
Failure to stop for a school bus
Vehicular homicide or manslaughter
Assault with a vehicle
Minor Violations / At-Fault Accidents
Examples include:
Any moving violation not listed as a major violation
At-fault collisions
Distracted driving offenses
Speeding under major-violation thresholds
Not counted as violations:
Verified not-at-fault accidents
Animal collisions
Broken windshields
Non-moving violations (parking tickets, etc.) are generally not counted but may be reviewed if they indicate safety risks.
Background Check & MVR Screening
All drivers must pass:
A background check
A Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review
These are ongoing requirements. HUM may rerun checks periodically or in response to new information.
Local TNC laws also apply and may impose stricter eligibility standards depending on your state.
Local TNC Laws Still Apply
In addition to HUM’s rules:
State TNC laws, city ordinances, and regulatory requirements apply at all times.
You must comply with any local requirements that apply to rideshare or transportation network drivers in your area.
Where there is a conflict between HUM’s internal standards and local law, HUM may enforce whichever standard is stricter for safety and compliance.
