HUM offers several ways for drivers to receive trips and build consistent earnings. Each ride type works differently and serves a unique purpose. This guide explains the four ride types available on HUM.
For detailed instructions on how to conduct a Private Ride, please see:
How to Conduct Private Rides (Step-by-Step)
1. Private Rides (Manual Rides)
Private Rides are HUM’s flagship ride type.
This is where drivers build recurring clients and earn the most control over their income.
Private Rides allow passengers to contact you directly (text or call) and request transportation outside of the traditional app-request flow. HUM provides the insurance and technology so these rides can be conducted legally and safely.
Key points:
You can legally say “yes” when a rider asks you for a direct pickup later.
These rides are started and ended inside the HUM Driver app for insurance coverage.
Drivers and riders handle payment directly (Cash, card reader, Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, Cash App, etc.).
HUM displays a fare at the end based on the rate card, but you collect your own agreed-upon payment.
Drivers keep 100% of the fare, minus the per-trip insurance assessment (Flex only).
Private Rides are ideal for building stable, repeat clients.

2. On-Demand Rides (Real-Time Requests)
These trips originate directly from the HUM Rider app. A passenger opens the app and requests a ride “right now.” HUM sends a ping to all nearby drivers, and the first driver to accept gets the trip.
Key points:
Requests go out to all drivers in the area at the same time.
Drivers are not penalized for missing or declining requests.
Drivers get the full trip details (pickup, destination, estimated fare) before accepting.
Payments are processed through Stripe. A connected Stripe account is required to get paid.
Subscribed drivers earn 100% of the fare.
Flex drivers earn 75% of the fare** for HUM-generated on-demand trips.
Important:
Always check Ride Details before accepting. If you accept and then cancel, the passenger loses their confirmed driver. We want riders to have a smooth experience, especially on their first HUM trip.
Keeping your app on increases your chances of receiving pings.

3. Pre-Scheduled Rides (Future Requests)
Passengers may request a ride for a future date and time. These scheduled trips are also broadcast to all drivers in the area. Drivers can view the details and accept them on a first-come, first-served basis.
Key points:
You see the pickup location, destination, timing, and fare estimate before accepting.
Accepted rides appear in your Scheduled Rides section of the menu.
Set reminders for yourself so you arrive on time.
You may receive a notification reminder as the scheduled time approaches.
If you can no longer complete the trip, cancel early. The ride will be moved to Live Requests for another driver to claim.
Pre-scheduled rides are valuable because they offer predictable earnings.
4. Dispatch-Assisted Private Rides
Dispatch-Assisted Private Rides support riders who prefer to call or may have difficulty using the HUM Rider app. Dispatch will:
Provide the fare quote directly to the passenger
Enter pickup and destination information
Send a ride request (“ping”) to drivers nearby
The driver conducts the trip and collects payment directly
The ride must be started and ended in the HUM Driver App
These rides appear like an on-demand request but are classified as Private Rides.
Important notes:
Drivers keep 100% of the fare
Payment is collected directly
A HUM Wallet balance is required for airport tolls
Flex drivers need a Wallet balance for insurance assessments (see Flex/Subscription article)

5. Live Requests
Live Requests are pre-scheduled rides that lost their originally assigned driver (usually due to cancellation). These rides are immediately released to all drivers in the area.
Key points:
Live Requests appear in your menu as a separate section.
These rides often have higher urgency because pickup is approaching soon.
Any driver can claim them on a first-come, first-served basis.
Drivers who monitor Live Requests can pick up extra guaranteed trips throughout the day.
