Private Rides are the core of HUM’s platform and the likely reason you are here. They allow drivers to legally accept direct requests from riders, build recurring clients, and earn full control over their income. HUM provides the insurance and compliance; you operate your business.
This guide explains exactly how to run a Private Ride from start to finish.
Before You Start
Make sure:
Your HUM Driver app is active and updated
You have an approved HUM driver account and plan (Subscription or Flex)
You have at least one way to collect payment directly (card reader, Venmo, Zelle, etc.)
A positive Wallet balance if you expect airport pickups or drop-offs (details below)
Step 1: Get the Request from the Rider
Private Rides always start with the rider contacting you directly by call or text.
Confirm:
Pickup location
Drop-off location (or general area)
Date and time
Number of passengers
Payment method
Step 2: Quote the Fare
You set the price.
Provide a clear total
Confirm whether the quote includes tolls, airport fees, or wait time
Tell them how they can pay (card, Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, Cash App, cash, etc.)
Stick to the fare you quote unless something major changes and you both agree.
Step 3: Start the Private Ride in the HUM Driver App
When you arrive at the pickup, you must start the ride in the app so it is covered by HUM’s insurance.
Open the HUM Driver app
Tap the Menu (☰)
Tap Private Ride (or Manual Ride)
-
Enter the rider’s phone number
If they refuse to share, enter a placeholder number you can recognize
Tap Request Ride
When the app shows the ride has been accepted, tap OK
Tap Arrived (if prompted)
Tap Start Ride
If asked to confirm you have the passenger, tap OK
Once the ride is started, navigate to the destination normally. The passenger may also include the destination from their app after the ride has been intiated.
Step 4: End the Ride
When you reach the destination:
Park safely
Open the HUM Driver app
Tap End Ride
The app will display a fare based on HUM’s Rate Card. This is for recordkeeping and insurance only. You still collect the fare you originally quoted.
Step 5: Collect Payment from the Rider
Payment for Private Rides happens outside the HUM app.
Recommended options:
Card reader: Square, Clover, National Bank Card, Intuit/QuickBooks, etc.
Cash apps: Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, Cash App
Cash: if you and the rider agree
Always:
Charge the rider the amount you quoted
Confirm the payment went through before they leave the vehicle
Step 6: Wallet Balance for Airport Tolls & Flex Insurance
Your HUM Wallet is used for:
Insurance assessments per Private Ride (Flex plan only)
Airport tolls and fees for all drivers
Airport Requirement
If you perform airport pickups or drop-offs, you must have enough Wallet balance to cover:
Airport tolls
Airport access fees
Per-trip insurance assessments (Flex only)
If your Wallet balance is too low:
Airport fees may fail
You may be automatically prevented from completing rides that require toll payment
You risk deactivation until the balance is restored
Your Wallet auto-recharges in $25 increments (if enabled) when the balance drops below the threshold needed for fees.
Step 7: Receipts
HUM only shows a receipt to riders who:
Have the HUM Rider app, and
Were logged correctly in a Private Ride
If your rider does not use the app:
Use your card reader or payment app to send a digital receipt
Or use a paper receipt book
Step 8: Troubleshooting
If something feels off during a Private Ride:
Phone keeps ringing or app seems stuck
Use the Back button to exit the ride screen
Close and reopen the HUM app
If needed, restart your phone
If nothing fixes it, turn your volume down, complete the ride safely, then contact support
Payment issues (card declined, app not working)
Ask if the rider has another method (different card, Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, Cash App, cash)
Do not leave without confirming payment or reaching a clear agreement
